The road to State is getting short, but the Skyhawks continue to add athletes to the list of those qualified to compete May 12 and 15th at Mesa Community College. In the past two weeks 8 girls have either qualified or better their current qualifying standard. On the boys side, 3 more qualified and one better his qualifying time.

At the Kellis Invite on April 3, 2010, Senior Elizabeth Wells improved her high jump season best to 5'0". Senior Marissa Gibson, competing in her first meet of the season qualified in both the 200m and the long jump with a time and jump of 26.63 and 16'3". And Sophomore Mackenzie Giglio joined the State caravan with her qualifying time of 26.99 in the 200m. The following week at the Greenway Invite, Sophomore Tessa Kelley ran a smoking 46.61 in the 300m low hurdles. In the same race, teammate Kayleigh Zobel ran a qualifying 48.85 to join the State competition. Senior
Chelsea Gobster vaulted 9'6" in the Pole Vault and Giglio added another event to her agenda for state, running 61.15 in the 400m. Sophomore Courtney Brown completed the jumps trio by qualifying in the long jump with a leap of 15'2.5". She's already qualified in the high jump and triple jump for state. Rounding off an outstanding meet for the girls was a 51.26 time in the 4x100m relay team consisting of Zobel, Brown, Kelley, and Gibson.

On the boys side at Kellis, Senior Hayden McClellan won the 300m hurdles with a 5A Division II leading time of 39.97, and Junior Josh Espinoza qualified for the 1600m with a winning time of 4:29.20. At Greenway, Junior Darius Watkins joined Trae Armstrong in the 200m running a state qualifying 22.84, and Senior John Green leaped himself in the state meet in the long jump with a 21'1.25" jump. Check out all the state qualifiers on the Athletes Qualified page.

Next up for the Skyhawks is their own Westside Invitational where hopefully they can fill in some more gaps before Regionals and State.

DV Boys 3rd at the North Canyon Invite

Deer Valley Boys Track & Field is back. After a mediocre season in 2009, the boys team has bounced back to an impressive 2010 season start, riding on the shoulders of super sophomore Trae Armstrong. Armstrong again dominated the sprints with three outstanding wins in the 100m, 200m and 4x1 relays. He ran 10.91, 21.95 and 43.23, two personal records for the sophomore. The 400m relay was especially exciting, as Armstrong had to run down the Marcos De Niza team who led into the final stretch. The Skyhawks eeked out the victory by .001 of a second.

The boys team finish 3rd in the North Canyon Invite with 53 points behind Chandler High (169) and Brophy (113), while the girls finished 7th with 29.2 points behind Chandler (245) and Xavier (120).

Helping out on the boys side was senior Hayden McClellan who ran the 3rd leg of the winning 400m relay, finished 5th in the 300m hurdles in 40.68 and 6th in the 110m high hurdles in 16.07. The 40.68 earn him an automatic bid to the state meet in the 300m hurdles. McClellan and Armstrong finished off the afternoon by placing 3rd in the 4x400m relay along with junior Ricky Fernandez and senior Brandon Witkowski. They ran 3:31.48 - only 2 seconds off the qualifying standard of 3:29.48. Joining Armstrong and McClellan on the 400m relay were junior Matt Kamer and Witkowski.

In the field, John Green had another state qualifying jump of 5'10" in the high jump to earn 4th place, and senior Riley Layton qualified in the pole vault with a 5th place vault of 12'0.5".

Leading the way for the girls on the track were sophomore Tessa Kelley and junior Ashley Edmondson. Kelley finished 4th in the 300m hurdles in 48.02, while Edmondson finished 6th in 400m in 62.81. Both capped off the afternoon by placing 3rd in the 4x400m relay along with sophomores Leah Zampini and Mackenzie Giglio with a time of 4:18.34. Giglio also finished 6th in the 200m in a time 28.17. Freshman Kaleigh Zobel had an impressive race in the 100m hurdles. In the prelims she ran 17.12, faster than 2 finalists. Had she run in the finals she would have placed 6th.

In the field the Skyhawks were led by senior Chelsea Gobster who placed 2nd in the pole vault with a state qualifying 8'6" vault. Zampini, also competing in the pole vault, tied for 7th. Sophomore Spencer Platek finished 4th in the high jump with her jump of 4'6".

Eight Skyhawks Qualified for State in First Invite

DV Track Meet 2: Gatorade Invite, originally uploaded by dr.coop.
The Deer Valley Skyhawks had a great showing at the Gatorade Invite Saturday, March 6 at Copper Canyon HS. Not only did eight track and field athletes qualify for state, but sophomore Tray Armstrong broke a meet record and recorded the fastest 100m and 200m times in the state so far this season. Armstrong won both the 100m and 200m with times of 11.38 and 22.95. He also anchored a state qualifying 400m relay with Matt Kamer, Eric Sanchez, and Hayden McClellan. They won first place in 44.16. Joining these speedsters on the boys side is senior John Green who qualified in the high jump with his jump of 5'10".

On the girls side, freshman Courtney Brown led the way for the Skyhawks on the field, jumping 5'1" in high jump and 32'10.5" in the triple jump, both besting the qualifying standards. Sophomore Tessa Kelley picked up where she left off last year in the 300m hurdles, running a 48.12 and qualifying in that event. And senior Chelsea Gobster did the same in the pole vault with her vault of 8'6".

Lots of athletes, new and experiences, competed on Saturday, and overall it was a good showing for both teams. Next meet is Wednesday at O'Connor HS.
